Rejection #14

Rejection #14 Sarah Ballard - United Agents

Dear Dominic,

I’m really mortified to realise that I haven’t responded to your submission of April last year. I had warned you I would take a while, but that really was far longer than I has anticipated!

I read your apostles submission a little while ago now, and I’m sorry to say that my gut feeling was that, despite the obvious ease of your prose, this wasn’t for me. I simply didn’t fall in love with it as I’d hoped to.

I’m sorry to disappoint you – and to have taken such a very long time to reply.....So do please forgive me. I hope it didn’t seem like apathy on my part.

I’m sure you’ll find someone who feels confident about taking this forward very soon – perhaps you have already - and I wish you well with it.

All good wishes

Sarah

Rejection #10 Legend Press

Dear Dominic,

Thank you for your submissions, we very much enjoyed the samples. However, I am sorry to say I do not feel your work is quite right for our list, as we only publish contemporary mainstream fiction, not genre-specific fiction. We are still a relatively small publishers, so competition for submissions is extremely high. However, I really enjoyed reading your submission, and wish you all the best in finding another publisher for your book.

If you have anything in the future that you think might be more suited to our list then please do send it to us!

With thanks again, and very best wishes,

Lucy

Rejection #4 Artellus Ltd

I got to this quickly - I'm sorry it needs more dazzle to compete in a very competitive mainstream market - the dialogue seems flat - many undeveloped good ideas. But there are some things brought up as ornaments with no narrative purpose.

Sorry - you seem to have a good audience already - reactions to fiction is always subjective of course - good luck.

Interest #1 Alexandra Nye

Interest #1 Alexandra Nye

There is one reason that this agency may not be genuine in its interest for Apostles and that is because it charges a reading fee. There is an unsaid rule that states no agent or agency should charge a reading fee, all fees come out of contracts and deals made for the author. Therefore I am wary of this agency, but I may consider them.

Dear Mr Took,

I have read your sample pages with interest. This does look to be an appealing and original title, and we would be more than happy to read the complete MS. However, I must advise that we charge a reading fee for more substantial feedback. The fee is £2,00 per 1000 words.

...omitted for clarity and confidentiality

I look forward to hearing from you,

Yours Sincerely,

Alexandra Nye

This is a standard rejection:

"I am sorry, but this is not presently what we are looking for. We wish you the best of luck in placing your work elsewhere."

This blog is about the rejections gained for The Apostles Sacrament which is my fourth title. I self published my first book The Storms of Acias back in 2005, its on Amazon or my website if you are intrested.

This is just a placeholder until the first few rejections come in.
